Temporary fence
Ouch! handlebar trap

The West End Boardwalk starts at the Victoria Bridge and continues along the edge of the Brisbane river around Kurilpa Point and under the William Jolly Bridge and Merivale Bridge. The boardwalk runs past the Millenium Arts Project precinct. While this new precint was being constructed and the existing one being refurbished in 2006 a temporary fence was installed alongside the development and bordering on this cycleway. This fence was not made to be cycle friendly despite its obvious location on a bikeway and presented some very real handlebar traps for cyclists. Construction was completed in Dec 2006.

The boardwalk then becomes a regular shared path and continues through the park at Kurilpa Point. After passing underneath the rail bridge the bikeway seems to veer right onto a narrow concrete path alongside the river. This path is immediately adjacent to the river and there is a rather nasty looking drop onto the rock covered river bank. There is no room for bidirectional traffic on this shared path. There are also other hazards such as low overhanging branches from the fig trees growing on the river bank. At some point further along this narrow path near a rowing club the path forks to the left, away from the river with no signage to indicate which path to continue on. The fork to the right shown in the picture below is the correct path for both pedestrians and cyclists to follow. If one was to follow the path straight ahead as shown below it leads to a nasty drop onto a boat ramp without warning. There is no night time illumination to make this evident either and so it is a dangerous situation more suited to the 'Dukes of Hazzard' type.
