Toowong is a very well connected suburb a few kilometres to the west of the Brisbane CBD.

Road-wise, it is connected to the CBD by Coronation Drive (with its Bicentennial Bikeway alongside) and Milton Road. Further westwards run the Western Freeway (with its bikeway) and Moggill Road. It also connects to St Lucia and the University of Queensland via Sir Fred Schonell Drive. Significant local roads are Sylvan Road, connecting the end of the Western Freeway (and Milton Road) to Coronation Drive, forming part of the North Toowong corridor, and Toowong High Street at the end of Moggill Road, also connecting it to Coronation Drive. The proposed Northern Link tunnel connects to Toowong and poses a significant risk to cycling in the suburb, particularly around the North Toowong corridor.

Toowong is also well served by public transport. It is situated on the Ipswich train line, with a station in the base of Toowong Tower, and a City Cat stop at the end of Sylvan Road. Almost all western suburbs bus routes go through Toowong, including the 444 and 598/599 services with bike racks.
