Riverside Drive
Riverside Drive is a popular cycling road running opposite Coronation Drive and used as part of several cycling routes including the West End loop and the river ride. The road itself is broken half way along by the rowing sheds next to Davies Park, but a short length of shared path joins the two parts.
Roadworks
Riverside Drive has recently been suffering from roadworks, particularly the long-running sewerage works and, at the city end, the Kurilpa Park works.
Brisbane City Council is proposing to close the road and develop a new park precinct along the river [1]. While the plan looks set to greatly improve the amenity of the area, there is some concern that the bike path proposed to replace the road will not be as wide, straight, and/or free of pedestrians as the current road [2]. The West End Riverside Parks Masterplan Summary Report says:
- By closing Riverside Drive, it is important not to replace one potentially high-speed mode (such as a motor vehicle) with another (such as cyclists). It is therefore recommended that the path be no wider than 4-5m as a measure to control the speed of cyclists in the parks and improve safety. [3]
