The works.

Energex closed part of the Bicentennial Bikeway next to the Queensland University of Technology under the Captain Cook Bridge and just next to the Goodwill Bridge in July 2006. The initial announced was that the works would last three months, but early in the project people on site said that the work would take six months, and it wasn't finished until a few months into 2007. For most of the duration the bikeway was not completely closed, just narrowed with temporary fencing, which also obstructed vision of oncoming cyclists around the corner.

A possible detour involves going down this alley.

A complete closure was in place December 4-20. The suggested detour was from the Goodwill Bridge to Gardens Point Road, through the magistrates' carpark (which was left open for the purpose), and back to the Bicentennial Bikeway. Peter Whittle published his own alternative route on Bikely (also available as PDF).

During November and early December 2006 (starting 8 November) the works also involved an overhead hoarding on the QUT end of the Goodwill Bridge. It was 5-7m long, 2.1m high and signed with "Cyclists must dismount" signs. It was accurately scheduled to be in place for up to five weeks. The contractors promised not to attempt to enforce the dismount signs, which were legally unenforceable anyway. However, incidents were reported with pedestrians confronting cyclists over the issue.
