North Quay - Sediment buildup on Makerston St ramp

The Makerston Street exit ramp from the North Quay bikeway continually collects a buildup of sediment after heavy rainfall. This presents a hazard for cyclists turning sharply from this downhill ramp onto the bikeway, particularly the turn hard left. The sediment is washed down from an un-stabilized bank beneath the freeway. The Brisbane City Council have been notified of this on several occasions after heavy rain and are usually quite quick to respond and sweep up the sediment. While Council is aware of the source of the sediment, they seem reluctant to address the real problem and properly stabilize the bank. A temporary sediment barrier was installed when Council did some water main work under the freeway around 2002 but it has long since deteriorated and has lost all of its 'barrier' properties. The problem is exacerbated in 2008 due to the increased bicycle traffic using this exit with the Tank Street Bridge works commencing and cycle traffic being detoured off the bikeway. A similar problem with sediment accumulating on the bikeway at Gardens Point was eventually fixed by the contractor who caused the problem with their earthworks.
