North Quay - Cycle Unfriendly Gully Grates

This is one of the very old style gully grates that does not comply with current AS3996 standard and which has been allowed to remain on this Council designated bike path. Council claim to have a program to replace all of the non-compliant gully grates over a fifteen year time frame - incredible when you think that these Standards exist for a reason and on some bike routes (not necessarily this one) one mishap on one of these gully grates could cost a cyclist his or her life in traffic.

BCC is very responsive to specific requests, for example the pictured grate on Witton Road, Indooroopilly, was replaced within a reasonable timeframe after a request to the local councillor. BCC has timed maintenance programs, but it relies on users to bring to attention to specific hazards that need to be addressed out of turn.
