The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a TransApex tunnel joining the Pacific Motorway and Ipswich Road at Woolloongabba to Lutwyche Road and the Inner City Bypass at Bowen Hills (via Shafston Avenue in Kangaroo Point).

The project as a whole has been contracted from Brisbane City Council to the RiverCity Motorway consortium, with construction subcontracted to a consortium known as LBB JV (Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Hornibrook Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture). RiverCity Motorway will own and operate the tunnel for 45 years (charging a toll for that time) and then transfer ownership to Council.

Effects of construction on cyclists

Construction of the tunnel is causing significant diversions and problems for cyclists. CBD BUG has a useful collection of detour maps and other documents.

Woolloongabba disruptions

It was announced in mid 2006 that construction would involve closing a section of the heavily used South East Freeway bikeway for the entire three years of construction, with cycle traffic diverted onto nearby roads including O'Keefe Street and Ipswich Road. Groups including Bicycle Queensland and CBD BUG lobbied to reduce the disruption but the revised plans still involve eighteen months of diversion from the bikepath. The bike path was closed with the demolition of the cycle bridge over Ipswich Road in early November 2006. Detour information is available from the RiverCity Motorway site [1].

Bowen Hills disruptions

Cycle routes near Lutwyche Road and Horace Street in Bowen Hills are also heavily affected by construction. Parts of both the eastbound shoulder and westbound shoulder on the Inner City Bypass have been closed, and the path from Albion closed [2].
