Newstead - Wickham St - Bikelane

The outbound lane on Wickham Street which runs from Fortitude Valley to Newstead has no bike lane nor Bicycle Awareness Zone (BAZ) leaving cyclists to fend for themselves and making no suggestions to motorists to expect cyclists. Magically however, a marked bike lane does appear about 50m before the newly constructed (2006) intersection with Montpellier Road at Newstead. The addition of this short section of bike lane before the intersection is of little advantage to cyclists as it appears without warning and is not signed in advance. The short section does virtually nothing to assist cyclists safely through the critical point where car traffic is making a left turn. The only marking on this section of bikeway is a token 'End Bike Lane' and bike symbol on the pavement immediately before the intersection.

It would seem that the Brisbane City Council are merely installing these short 'stubs' of bikelanes adjacent to new intersections that they construct with little thought put into the surrounding or supporting infrastructure. A similar example exists on a new intersection on Shand Street at Alderley.
