Milton - Suncorp Stadium Bridge

This bridge crossing over Milton Road connects the forecourt of Suncorp Stadium (formerly known as Lang Park) with Milton railway station. The bridge is used primarily by pedestrian attendees at events held at the stadium. This bridge also provides a useful connection for cyclists wishing to connect between Hale Street or the Inner City Bypass and the Bicentennial Bikeway by the river or simply to cross Milton Road. There is otherwise limited safe connectivity between these routes for cyclists.

At times outside of events there is often very little pedestrian traffic and it is quite safe to ride across this bridge. There is however some confusion about the legality of riding across this bridge. On the Suncorp Stadium side of this bridge there is a small but official "No bicycles" sign albeit in poor condition, however there is no such sign presented if you are traveling from the other side.

After several months of enquiry and being passed between departments, in Nov 07, the Major Sports Facilities Authority admitted responsibility for the infrastructure and informed that the 'No bicycles' sign was a 'left over' from the construction time and that bicycles were in fact allowed to ride over this facility in both directions and that the only restriction on cycle traffic was in the forecourt of the Stadium itself during events. The immediate removal of the sign was requested to prevent unnecessary confusion for both cyclists and pedestrians. As of Dec 07 the sign had not been removed.

A further risk for cyclists in this area exists on the railway side of the bridge. About 20m from the bridge there is a very high set of steps which lead down onto the footpath of Milton Road. These steps have no barrier at their top (although there are tactile tiles installed here) and a cyclist or mobility vehicle could inadvertently ride down these. A similar arrangement of steps in-line with a shared path like this, resulted in the death of a cyclist on the approach to the Story Bridge and this arrangement was then changed by the Council. No response has been forthcoming from the Major Sports Facilities Authority on the safety of this arrangement.
