Department of Main Roads
From Bikeqld
The Queensland Department of Main Roads is responsible for highways and major roads between towns. Other roads are the responsibility of local government. Public transport and integrated transport planning are the responsibility of sister department Queensland Transport.
Main Roads has a cycling section on its web site [1].
Cycling Policy
Main Roads' cycling policy is governed by the 2004 Cycling on State Controlled Roads document, which is fairly lightweight but describes MR's general official support for cycling and some of the process involved in planning for and supporting cycling on their roads [2].
Technical publications
Main Roads publishes a variety of technical publications, some of which are relevant to cyclists. Some of the more useful ones are the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the Traffic and Road Use Manual [3]. Some additional documents are available only in paper form [4].
An interesting resource on Queensland road crashes is the website WebCrash, which provides data, information and analytical tools. [5].
Contact details
Main Roads is divided into fairly autonomous geographical districts. Enquiries relating to particular districts should be directed to those district offices (full details in PDF). Senior individual contact details are available in the organisational chart.
