Fig Tree Pocket Road is one of the entry points to the popular
Western Freeway Bikeway. This road crosses the
Centenary Highway with an overpass. One side of this overpass has a shared path but the other side does not. Cyclists using the road on this overpass are exposed to a dangerous situation where the overpass has only got a 750mm high traffic barrier (parapet) with no additional railing to prevent transverse passage over the parapet and down onto the highway below. Most modern overpasses have an additional railing to prevent such accidents occuring. A cyclist riding across this overpass will find that the barrier is about the same height as the top rail of the bicycle frame putting the cyclists centre of gravity well above the barrier. A simple clip by a passing car or swerve to miss road debris could result in a cyclist over-balancing and falling to the highway below.
