The Bikeqld web site is a wiki, allowing anybody to share useful information with others, and to update and correct existing information. It is important to realise that information on the site can be contributed and changed by anyone and its correctness cannot be guaranteed.

Purpose

The web site is closely related to the email list, where more interactive discussion takes place. List members and others with relevant information of a more persistent nature are encouraged to share it on this web site in order to make it more easily available to others.

Using the site

To find information on this web site, browse around as you would for any other site. You can search for particular information using the search box at left. For more information about using the wiki, consult the MediaWiki help.

Contributing

You are encouraged to contribute information to the web site, and to expand on, update or correct existing information. Information should be accurate and relevant to cycling in Queensland, and you also need to be willing to share your information in the public domain. To be able to contribute you will need an account (which you can create for yourself) and an understanding of the wiki's markup. Once you're logged in, it's just a case of clicking the "edit" link at the top of each page".

Creating an account

  1. Click on the "create an account" link in the top right corner of the page.
  2. Fill in the account creation form
    • Create a user name for yourself. This name follows the same rules as page names: the first letter will always be capitalised, and you can use punctuation (such as apostrophes and spaces). Using your name as you would normally write it (e.g. "Bob Smith") is recommended.
    • Create a new password for yourself.
    • Repeat the same password again.
    • Enter your email address. It will not be shown to other users.
    • Enter your full name (particularly if you chose to use a different user name).
  3. Click on the "Create new account" button

More detailed help is available in MediaWiki's help page on logging in.

Logging in

If you already have an account, log in by clicking on the "log in" link in the top right corner of the page. You'll need to enter your username and password. If you can't remember your username, check the list of users. If you can't remember your password, type in your username and press the "E-mail password" button to have it emailed to you. Once you have both pieces of information, type them in and press the "log in" button.

Once you've logged in on a particular computer you won't need to do so again. Your login is recorded in a cookie in your browser, so when you return to the site in the future you will be recognised automatically.

More detailed help is available in MediaWiki's help page on logging in.

Editing a page

If you spot some information on a page that you would like to update or add to, please do. Once you've created yourself an account, click the "edit" link in the row of tabs at the top of the page you want to change. This gives you a text box in your browser in which you can see the wiki source markup for the page. It's reasonably easy to understand but, if in doubt, you can usually fudge your way through by just following from what's already there.

Once you've made your changes, check that they look how you expect by clicking on the "Show preview" button. This will show you the page how it will look if you save it now and, below, give you the text box again to make any further changes necessary. The page isn't yet saved - you still need to do that (see below).

It's helpful to others looking at the page history and recent changes if you provide a short summary of the changes you're making (or information you're adding) to the page. Type this in the "Summary" box, and press "Save page" once you're happy with your changes.

More detailed help (including a reference to wiki markup) is available in MediaWiki's help page on editing.

Discussing a page

Sometimes it's useful to have a background discussion about a particular page, for example when:

Each "normal" content page on the site has a corresponding "talk" page with the same name and a "Talk:" prefix. You can access this page via the "discussion" link in the row of tabs at the top of the page. You edit this page just like any other page but, unlike other pages, in general you should "sign" your comments and not edit the comments of others.

Talk pages are intended for comments, questions or suggestions relating to a page and are unlike normal pages in that they can present a discussion and personal opinions, whereas normal pages should be largely objective presentation of fact.

Consider whether what you want to say is most appropriate for a talk page or the email list; a guideline is that discussion of the web site is good on the talk pages and discussion of the subject matter (i.e. Queensland cycling issues) is good on the list.

For more information, see MediaWiki's help page on talk pages.

Uploading a file

To upload a picture or other file to the wiki, click on the "Upload file" link in the "toolbox" area at the left side of the page. Choose the file on your computer that you want to upload, adjust the name if necessary, provide a brief description, and press the "Upload file" button.

Please note that the same ownership requirements apply to uploaded files as to page text; don't upload material that's copyrighted by somebody else.
