Gallery of Modern Art works
Construction on the new Queensland Gallery of Modern Art adjacent to the Queensland Cultural Centre was ongoing between 2004 until its opening in December 2006, as part of the Millenium Arts Project. Information on the project can be found from the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Government.
Work caused disruption and diversions on the South Bank Boardwalk. Access from Riverside Drive through Kurilpa Park (at the Merivale Bridge) was been blocked intermittently, with cyclists redirected on a detour up Merivale Street and onto Melbourne Street and across the Victoria Bridge (with signs for northern suburbs traffic to turn on to Peel Street to access the William Jolly Bridge). One such diversion was from 27 June to 11 July 2006.
Crossing the Victoria Bridge in the central bike lane forced a right turn onto William Street at the end, which is not where all users of Riverside Drive want to end up. To access the western shared path on the Victoria Bridge (including to get to the Bicentennial Bikeway westbound, for example as part of the River ride), one option was take the left turn from Merivale Street to Melbourne Street as signed, then use the lights at the left turn into Peel Street to hop onto the left hand footpath and continue up to the Cultural Centre bus station on the footpath. At the bus station, one veered left around the back of the benches and up to the bridge.
