Bicentennial Bikeway widening works
The Bicentennial Bikeway has been at full capacity for some years and is now being progressively widened to cope with the volume of traffic it carries. The existing 3 metre shared path is being upgraded to a 5.5 metre separated path.
Stage one of the upgrade is a 400 metre section of the path between Hale Street and Park Road, Milton. Future stages are planned to extend out to Toowong. Stage one was originally planned to be built progressively in 100 metre sections, but demands from the Lord Mayor to have the project finished by the end of the 2008/2009 financial year resulted in the whole 400 metres being upgraded at once.
Works got underway on site in April 2009. An elevated, temporary path was constructed on the river side of the actual path. On 29 April, the existing pathway was closed and path users diverted onto the new structure. Signage and traffic controllers required cyclists to dismount, or detour via Coronation Drive. This situation is scheduled to be in place until July 2009.
