Gladstone Road
Where Annerley Road meets Gladstone Road travelling inbound it veers to the right, with the Gladstone Road being the continuing road and the Eleanor Schonell Bridge to the left.
When continuing straight ahead to Gladstone Road cyclists will notice the wide kerbside lane narrows, with a ramp to encourage them up onto the wider footpath. Taking this option leads to a cycle crossing, a wait for a change of the lights, a bus stop, a ramp back onto the road and a bike lane. The alternative is to continue on the road, usually giving a clear run through the lights but a higher chance of being hit by a car as the road narrows.
Turning right to continue on Annerley Road involves crossing two lanes and holding position in the third of four lanes; this is easy in very light traffic, but at busier times it is best left to experienced cyclists [1]. An alternative is to stay in the left lane, take the ramp onto the footpath and cross at the lights (as above), then cross Gladstone Road. This can be done either on the road or at another cycle crossing immediately next to it.
When crossing Gladstone Road at the lights, be very careful of cars racing the red light. This is a very popular practice at this intersection, and one day, a pedestrian or cyclist moving off the kerb with the green light is going to be hit. You are encouraged to contact Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Police asking for enforcement and the installation of a red light camera. They have been asked before, but the practice continues unabated.
