"Cyclists must dismount" sign

From time to time some works impinging on an off-road cycle route are signed with yellow "Cyclists must dismount" signs. Despite the wording, these signs are advisory only and not legally enforceable. Nonetheless, they cause considerable annoyance both to cyclists, who generally don't like being seen to disobey signs, and to pedestrians, who generally don't like seeing cyclists disobey signs. In the case of the Bicentennial Bikeway sewerage works, one site of these signs and considerable consequent conflict, the signs were subsequently changed to "Cyclists must slow down".

The "Cyclists must dismount" signs are now against Brisbane City Council policy, and Queensland Transport and Main Roads also recognise that they are not desirable. One recalcitrant organisation apparently still insisting on them (in the case of the QUT Energex works at the end of the Goodwill Bridge) is QBuild, although even they do not insist on attempting to enforce the signs.
