Then again, maybe the City is quite friendly and just being "managed"
and populated by the ignorant and condescending and
generally-antithetical-to-cycling-as-transport...

I'm pretty sure some of the buildings and trees and bridges and
suchlike are fond of cyclists and cycling. As much as an inanimate
object can be said to be fond of anything.
